GRSE Delivers Unmanned Surface Vessel 'Jaldoot' to DRDO
Jaldoot, delivered after successful trials from October 17-21, is a joint development by GRSE and DRDO for survey and communication missions.
Defence PSU Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has officially handed over the "Jaldoot" Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) to the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) in Visakhapatnam, following successful completion of its trials.
The vessel, delivered after acceptance trials from October 17-21, was jointly designed and developed by GRSE and NSTL/DRDO for survey and communication missions. Featuring compact dimensions and lightweight design, the USV is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and supports waypoint navigation, station-keeping, and failsafe operations. It can also integrate various sensors, including an acoustic positioning system for tracking UUVs, a side-scan sonar for SAR missions, and a 1080p HD camera with night vision.
Additionally, a domestic tech start-up, M/s Rekise Marine, collaborated in the vessel’s development. GRSE emphasized that this achievement highlights the success of joint R&D efforts and the involvement of indigenous start-ups in advancing technology.
Other public and private sector entities are also venturing into USV development. Bharat Electronics Limited has created a zero-emission USV for hydrographic surveying and coastal surveillance, while Sagar Defence Engineering’s autonomous vessel recently completed a 1,500-km voyage without human intervention. Dronobotics has designed the Jalchar USV for disaster management, search and rescue, and commercial applications.
