Agriculture Minister Shivraj Chouhan assures MSP for all agricultural produce amid farmers' march to Delhi.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan assured the Rajya Sabha on Friday that the Modi government would continue purchasing all farm produce at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). This promise came as farmers began a foot march to Delhi, demanding legal backing for MSP and other farmer welfare measures.

Chouhan made the assurance during the Question Hour while responding to questions on MSP. He emphasized that the government had been committed to ensuring a 50% profit margin over the cost of production for farmers, in line with the MS Swaminathan Commission's recommendations. He pointed out that the Modi government has been calculating MSP based on this principle since 2019, and crops like paddy, wheat, jowar, and soyabean have been purchased with a 50% profit margin for the past three years.

The minister also took a swipe at the opposition, accusing them of rejecting the Swaminathan Commission's recommendations when they were in power. He cited records from former ministers Kantilal Bhuria, Sharad Pawar, and K.V. Thomas, who, according to Chouhan, had opposed the recommendation to provide 50% profit above the cost of production.

Union Agricultural Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's statement comes amid growing farmer protests in Delhi, as farmers continue to press for a legal guarantee for MSP. His remarks were intended to address concerns about MSP and reaffirm the government's commitment to farmer welfare amidst ongoing protests.
