The Indian government has issued a late-night advisory urging citizen to avoid traveling to Syria and advising those currently in the country to leave immediately due to the escalating violence from rebel forces. The advisory follows a sharp deterioration in the security situation, with over 370,000 people displaced since late November and key cities like Aleppo and Hama falling under rebel control.

On December 6, 2024, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) warned Indian nationals of the rapidly worsening conditions in Syria, as rebel groups, particularly Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), have intensified offensives across northern and central Syria. These groups have seized strategic cities, triggering widespread displacement and deepening the humanitarian crisis.

Approximately 90 Indian nationals are currently in Syria, including 14 working with United Nations agencies. The MEA has urged these individuals to leave the country immediately and to maintain contact with the Indian Embassy in Damascus for assistance

The violence is concentrated in northern and central Syria, particularly in cities like Aleppo and Hama, where intense fighting has exacerbated the humanitarian situation. Since November 27, 2024, when rebel forces launched a major offensive, the capture of key urban areas has led to widespread fear and instability. The recent surge in violence marks a significant shift in the conflict, which had seen relative stability in recent years. The situation has led to an urgent need for international attention and intervention.

The Indian government’s advisory highlights the urgency of the situation, with over 370,000 people displaced and many more in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. In light of the escalating violence, the MEA has strongly recommended that all Indian nationals in Syria leave immediately, ideally via commercial flights. Those unable to depart are advised to exercise extreme caution, limit outdoor activities, and stay in close contact with the Indian Embassy. For assistance, Indian nationals can reach the Indian Embassy in Damascus at +963 993385973 (also available on WhatsApp) or by email at hoc.damascus@mea.gov.in.

As the crisis in Syria continues to worsen, the Indian government’s advisory underscores the urgent need for global efforts to address the broader humanitarian crisis. With millions affected by the ongoing violence, international attention and diplomatic efforts are essential to bring about peace and stability in the region.
